Time to dust off that workout gear! National Fitness Day falls on Wednesday 26th September but employee wellness is a vital element of your employee programme every day.

If you’re looking to boost employee wellness, take steps to help your workforce become healthier or just blow away the cobwebs and get people moving here are our top tips.

1. Encourage a healthier commute
Commuting doesn’t need to be a bore, swapping that cramped tube journey for a cycle or power walk can help get you set up for a great day at work. Cyclescheme®, our market-leading cycle to work scheme, enables employees to save 25-39% on a bike and accessories from all specialist high street stores across our 2000 store network, including Cycle Republic and Evans. We also have a range of exclusive online cycling partners including Rapha, Ribble and our newest partner Specialized.

  1. Make it competitive
This National Fitness Day why not add a bit of healthy competition to kick start a new initiative? For example, you could ask employees to submit their step count each week or send in their very best healthy recipes for the chance to win a gift card.

  1. Let technology aid and motivate
Technology and fitness increasingly go hand in hand with items like fitness trackers and smart watches jumping to the top of people’s wish lists. If you add Techscheme® to your employee benefits package your workforce will be able to purchase the latest tech at a saving via salary sacrifice.

  1. Get your five a day
There are a number of ways you can help your employees make healthier food choices. Whether your workplace has a full canteen, a vending machine or just a kettle consider how you can boost the amount of healthier options you are providing for example providing fresh fruit weekly can be a great office treat.

  1. Take your meetings outside
Boost your step count by holding a walking meeting! Encourage your workplace to take one meeting a week outside and enjoy the benefits of getting work done whilst also getting in some exercise. You could even set up a leader board for the number of steps completed per team each week.

  1. Offer savings on grocery shopping
If you’re encouraging your employees to make healthier food choices consider how delighted they’d be if you also gave them the means to save money on their everyday food spend. Pure® is a prepaid Mastercard® that can save your employees up to 15% in over 70 national retailers including ASDA, M&S and Waitrose.

  1. Ask for suggestions
Use National Fitness Day as an opportunity to start an honest conversation about wellness with your employees. Ask them what wellness initiatives they would like to see at your company, chances are they already have some great ideas! Or try sending out a simple survey listing some of the above tips.  You’ll soon have a better picture of what your next steps should be and will feel confident that you are helping to make a real difference.
